IJB A06/21 : Open Fellowship position for a Medical Doctor in Clinical Cancer Research - Scholarship

The Institut Jules Bordet (IJB) (www.bordet.be), a university teaching hospital of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (U.L.B.), is an internationally renowned, comprehensive cancer center. The main mission of the Institut is to provide patient-focused care within a research-oriented environment that strives for excellence. Services range from cancer screening to multidisciplinary cancer treatment and state-of-the-art basic, translational and clinical research.

The Gastrointestinal Unit is part of the Medical Oncology Department of the IJB. Over time, this Unit has developed a number of innovative clinical trials with a strong translational component, especially in the setting of upper and lower gastrointestinal cancers. In addition, it has established strategic collaborations with national and international academic partners within the context of several cooperative groups such as the Belgian group of Digestive Oncology (BGDO), the Belgian Society of Medical Oncology (BSMO), the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), and the Oncodistinct Network.

Over the years, the Gastrointestinal Unit has hosted many international fellows, who consistently regarded their fellowship as an incredibly formative experience and a milestone for their career development. Young medical oncologists who work at the IJB have indeed a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of clinical and translational research, by working in a thrilling environment composed of a highly experienced team of clinicians, clinical researchers, basic and translational scientists, research nurses, trial coordinators, data managers, statisticians, pharmacovigilance experts, financial experts, and legal advisors.

Function

Fellowship activities include :

  • Acting as medical advisor for academic phase I, II or III trials in the setting of early-stage or advanced gastrointestinal cancers; this includes being responsible for all medical aspects of the trial as well as participation in conference calls and other study-related meetings;
  • Writing and developing the study protocol of new academic phase I-III trials in the setting of early-stage or advanced gastrointestinal cancers;
  • Leading on translational research projects;
  • Writing review and research articles, and book chapters;
  • Writing abstracts and presenting these at national and international meetings;
  • Writing grant applications;
  • Actively participating in the weekly research meetings of the Gastrointestinal Unit;
  • Actively participating in training opportunities such as journal clubs and peer-review exercises;
  • Interacting with other departments within the Institut for related research activities;
  • Interacting with members of the Clinical Trials Support Unit (CTSU);
  • Attending oncology conferences, meetings and workshops as representative of the Gastrointestinal Unit;
  • Helping on the training of new team members.

Profile

To be eligible, candidates must :

  • Hold a degree in medicine and have recently completed, or are soon to complete, their training in Medical Oncology
  • Preferably have previous experience in clinical and/or translational research, with a reasonable track record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Be fluent in English both spoken and written (French and/or Dutch are an asset)
  • Be able to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment
  • Have excellent communication and team-working skills
  • Have multi-tasking skills, be able to establish priorities and to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines
  • Have excellent knowledge of most common software used in clinical/translational research
